A cast-iron radiator can be one of the most visually substantial objects in an older room. Hiding it behind a generic coat of paint wastes that presence. Refinishing it properly can make the radiator read as architecture rather than equipment.
This project story comes from Stephan Gillet’s work at Addison’s in Toronto, a large architectural salvage and prop resource. Six cast-iron radiators had been stripped before Stephan developed metallic and aged finishes for them.
The original project
Addison’s contains reclaimed fixtures and architectural pieces used by designers, homeowners and film productions. Among claw-foot tubs, pedestal sinks and antique doors were rows of cast-iron radiators with deep moulded detail.
The six units in this project were cleaned and stripped before decorative work began. That sequence matters: the visual finish could only succeed after rust, grime and unstable old coating had been addressed.

First determine whether the radiator is in service
A decorative finish must never interfere with the mechanical assessment. Before coating a radiator that will be reinstalled or remains connected, confirm its condition with the appropriate heating professional. Leaks, failed valves, damaged sections and system work are outside the purpose of paint.
The painter also needs to know:
- Whether the radiator is steam, hot-water or decorative only
- Its expected operating temperature
- Whether it will be removed for refinishing
- Which sides will remain visible
- Whether connections or valves will be replaced
- How it will be moved safely
Why removal usually improves the finish
Refinishing before installation gives access to the back, feet, lower sections and narrow spaces between columns. It also separates coating work from flooring and wall finishes.
Cast-iron radiators are extremely heavy. Their movement and disconnection should be planned by people equipped for the task. A painter should not improvise mechanical disconnection or lifting simply to reach the back.
Preparation is more complicated than brushing the front
Old radiators may carry several generations of paint, corrosion and household residue. The existing coating must be assessed for adhesion and potential hazards before it is disturbed.
Depending on condition and the intended result, preparation may involve professional stripping, rust treatment, detailed cleaning, hand preparation and a compatible primer. The narrow spacing between sections makes careless sanding both ineffective and dusty.
Choose a coating for the temperature and service
Not every decorative wall paint belongs on a working radiator. The coating manufacturer’s temperature limits and substrate recommendations should be checked. The system needs to tolerate heating cycles without softening, discolouring or losing adhesion.
The appropriate finish also depends on whether the radiator is a low-temperature hot-water unit, a hotter steam radiator or an object no longer connected to a heating system. Product selection should be based on the actual service condition, not the word “metallic” on the label.
Colour can make the radiator quiet or prominent
Match the wall
Using a colour close to the wall reduces contrast and allows the radiator to remain visually calm. This works when the room already has strong architectural elements.
Relate it to the trim
A radiator can join the room’s millwork by using a related trim colour or sheen. This often feels more intentional than treating it as a separate appliance.
Make it a feature
Metallic, aged and darker finishes can emphasize moulded detail. This is most successful when the radiator’s shape is worth seeing and the rest of the room gives it space.
Aging effects need a believable hierarchy
The original Addison’s pieces received metallic colour and antiqued patina. A convincing aged finish does not distribute darkness evenly. Recesses hold more shadow, raised edges catch more light and repeated contact points may read differently from protected areas.
Samples should establish how much contrast is appropriate. Too little and the detail disappears; too much and the radiator becomes theatrical.
Do not coat working parts indiscriminately
Valves, vents, unions, threads and identification plates may need to remain functional or legible. Masking and disassembly should be coordinated with the mechanical plan. A thick decorative build over moving or serviceable parts creates future problems.
What the project taught
The Addison’s work remains a useful example because it treated reclaimed radiators as designed objects. Their mass, detail and history were not erased. Preparation made them sound; the finish made their form visible.
The lesson applies beyond radiators. Old grilles, registers, railings and architectural metal often deserve the same sequence: determine function, repair first, choose a compatible system and then decide how much attention the object should receive.
Planning a radiator refinishing project
- Photograph every side and all connections.
- Confirm the mechanical condition and removal plan.
- Assess old coating before disturbance.
- Decide whether the radiator should blend in or become a feature.
- Approve a finish sample.
- Protect valves, threads and serviceable parts.
- Allow full curing before transport and reinstallation.
