When a baby, pregnant person or someone with asthma lives in the home, the painting plan should be more careful than simply choosing a can labelled “low odour.” Product selection matters, but so do dust control, ventilation, work sequence and the time allowed before the room returns to use.
What Health Canada says about VOCs
Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are a large group of chemicals found in indoor and outdoor air. Paint, varnish and other building products can contribute to indoor VOC levels. Health effects depend on the specific compound, its concentration and the duration of exposure.
Health Canada says that VOC levels normally found in Canadian homes do not usually pose a significant risk for most people. Some VOC exposures can nevertheless cause headaches, irritation, dizziness, nausea or breathing problems, and children, pregnant people, seniors and people with asthma or other respiratory conditions may be more susceptible.
Start by defining who needs protection
Before work begins, tell the painter about:
- Infants and young children in the home
- Pregnancy
- Asthma, chronic lung disease or previous reactions to paint
- Pets, especially birds, that may be sensitive to airborne contaminants
- Rooms that cannot be isolated from the rest of the house
- How soon the space must return to use
This information affects the product, schedule and containment plan. It should not be treated as a detail introduced after painting starts.
Choose the complete coating system
“Zero VOC” or “low VOC” is useful information, but it is not a complete health assessment. The primer, patching compound, caulk, cleaner, colourant and finish coat all belong to the project. A low-VOC finish coat does not erase emissions or odour from other products used underneath it.
Review the current product label, Safety Data Sheet and Technical Data Sheet. Confirm that the exact base, colour and sheen are appropriate because specifications can vary across a product line.
Low odour does not mean zero emissions
Odour and exposure are related imperfectly. Some compounds are noticeable at low concentrations, while others may be present without a strong smell. The absence of paint smell should not be used as the only test for whether a sensitive occupant should re-enter.
Control dust before thinking about the finish coat
Preparation can create a more immediate exposure problem than rolling modern waterborne paint. Sanding compound, scraping old coatings and cleaning accumulated dust all need control.

Use localized containment where practical, protect air returns, remove dust with suitable extraction and cleaning methods and avoid circulating preparation debris through the house.
Older homes need a lead-paint decision
Health Canada says a home built before 1960 probably contains lead-based paint. Homes built between 1960 and 1990 may still contain lead, especially on exterior surfaces. Lead-contaminated dust is particularly dangerous to infants, children and unborn children.
If older paint may be disturbed, do not begin aggressive sanding based on age alone. The coating may require testing or a specialized control plan. In some circumstances, intact lead-based paint is safer left undisturbed and covered than unnecessarily removed.
Ventilate to the outside
Health Canada recommends increasing ventilation when using products such as paints, glues, varnishes and adhesives. When outdoor air quality is suitable:
- Open windows to create cross-ventilation
- Use exhaust that moves air outdoors rather than into another room
- Keep the work area isolated from occupied areas
- Use the home’s mechanical ventilation correctly and avoid spreading contaminants
- Continue ventilation during drying and early curing as product instructions allow
An ordinary particle-only air cleaner does not remove gases simply because it has a HEPA filter. Equipment should be selected for the contaminant it is intended to control.
Plan when the occupant will leave and return
For a sensitive household, the safest practical plan may be for the occupant to remain outside the work area during preparation and application. Return timing should follow the manufacturer’s ventilation and occupancy guidance, the scale of the project and medical advice specific to the person.
A nursery should be completed with enough time for drying, curing and ventilation before it is needed. Painting the room immediately before a baby arrives creates avoidable schedule pressure.
A responsible nursery-painting checklist
- Select the exact primer and finish from current technical documents
- Complete repairs early enough for compounds to dry
- Assess possible lead paint in older homes
- Isolate and clean preparation dust
- Ventilate directly outdoors
- Keep vulnerable occupants away from the work area
- Allow the specified recoat and return-to-service time
- Wash or clean surfaces only after the coating has adequately cured
